Beaute de Mamam Nipple Gel
A step above all the rest? Carefully selected Ingredients by Beaute de Maman...
Omega 3 Fatty Acids – I have developed an omega 3 fatty acid plant based, colorless and odorless gel This gel is moisturizing and soothing to the nipples and does not need to be wiped off prior to feeding. Safe for baby! Omega 3 Fatty Acids are important to the newborn infant. Numerous studies have demonstrated that lower levels of omega 3 fatty acids can lead to learning disability, attention deficit disorder, lower IQ, and impaired cognitive development. Other studies show that giving a dietary source of DHA increases visual acuity and enhance scores on motor skills and language development. Supplementation of the maternal diet with omega 3 fatty acids has also been shown to prevent the development of allergic and other immune mediated diseases in infancy.
Calendula Officinalis – This herb is a well-known remedy that is antibacterial, anti-fungal, and helps to prevent mastitis.
Vitamin E- An antioxidant that helps heal dry chapped skin.
Other Brands:
Lanolin - The first thing you need to know is that pesticides have not one, BUT TWO, ways of getting into lanolin-based nipple gels and creams. It all begins with sheep—as lanolin comes from the sebaceous glands of these animals. Lanolin is an animal based product, 100% cholesterol, and is taken from sheep that graze on grass that is treated with pesticides. Sheep are often drenched with a chemical that prevents parasite infections. This chemical gets absorbed into the wool and oil glands of the sheep. After the sheep is shorn, the wool is sent to a special chemical scouring bath to separate the lanolin from the wool. Once processed, lanolin is then concentrated and sold to companies that create creams, ointments, and cosmetics. Several studies have demonstrated that there are residual pesticides in lanolin-containing compounds IN SPITE of purification by the companies that produce it. This means that lanolin that is purified most likely will have residual pesticides both from the wool and from the grass that the sheep graze. Therefore, when a new mother breastfeeds using lanolin-based products, her infant may be getting trace amounts of these harmful chemicals. In addition, some women have wool allergy and will react to lanolin based products. Religious women who cannot have milk or animal products also cannot use lanolin. Lanolin is also a dark brown, greasy and smelly gel and is known to stain undergarments and bed linens.
Olive Oil - If the nipple product (or any body product for that matter) contains olive oil, I recommend you put it back on the store shelf. Why? Because Beauté de Maman did a trial of products containing olive oil prior to being released onto the market and found that the product crystallized and became rancid after 3 months, similar to olive oil that is used for cooking. We therefore opted to use a different omega 3 fatty acid — one that is healthy for newborns and maintains shelf-life for a much longer period of time.
Marshmallow Root - There is no data on the safety of marshmallow root and therefore this ingredient should not be used for infant ingestion until clear safety data is available.
Beeswax - There is also no data on the safety of beeswax and therefore this ingredient should not be used for infant ingestion until clear safety data is available. Beeswax comes from honeycombs and is found in candles. Furthermore, honeycombs are where bees produce and store their honey. Honey may contain spores that contain botulism. Pediatricians warn new parents to never give honey to an infant under one year of age. Beeswax may still contain honey particles and therefore I would not recommend using a nipple gel product containing beeswax.
Shea Butter - Shea butter is a cholesterol compound similar to cocoa butter. It is considered a saturated fatty acid which most individuals are trying hard to eliminate in their diets as recommended by the National Institute of Health. Beauté de Maman uses a monounsaturated fatty acid base, which is a much healthier alternative for the newborn infant.
